| As
the intro said, we started in the hobby during October 99, a month to remember
for two reasons. First it was like opening an account with no limit at the
hobby shop, and we had the pleasure of meeting Beavis, AKA Kevin Maxfield!
I bought a brand new Kalt Baron 30 with all the kit, in a deal from Ashton Models. We'd gone there with the intention of buying a Shuttle, but that weekend Barry didn't have one in stock. With the benefit of 20:20 hindsight, it may have been better if we'd waited a few days and bought the Shuttle instead. Who was to know that Kalt were going to go belly up in such a short period of time? Anyway, with the Visa Card licking it's wounds, we got back home with loads of interesting "stuff"!The Baron came with an Irvine 36, starting equipment, fuel, glow leads etc, and the supplied radio was a JR 642 package with an extra servo. So far so good. We also left the shop with Beavis's e-mail address and the advice "read the instructions twice before you start to build it!" Back home, I was allowed a quick cup of coffee whilst reading the instructions, and then building began and didn't stop until 1:00 am the following morning.I was very impressed with the quality of the kit and instructions. I'd built and flown planks as a youth, mainly control line and free flight, but I'd never taken on a task like this one. It was more an exercise in engineering than model making, but the manual was followed to the letter and after a further day's work it was finished. At this point I thought it would be a good idea to have an expert check it out so I e-mailed Beavis to arrange things for the following weekend becuse I was working away from home at the time. Probably just as well. I'm sure I'd have fallen foul of temptation during the week and done some serious damage! |
